Even a small accident in a mountain environment can be very expensive. The classic public health or travel insurance does not cover the costs of the Mountain Rescue Service associated with the rescue activities or searches. The cost of the so-called technical intervention (transport on stretchers, search, aircraft) is a person located in a mountain environment obliged to pay. This obligation does not apply to individuals who are not adults – children and individuals who do not have legal capacity.
With a well-chosen mountain insurance, nothing can surprise you on the hike. Take out mountain insurance to protect yourself from unexpected events and injuries.
Most insurance companies distinguish between
- basic (hiking, movement on marked trails)
- extreme (climbing, ski touring or other adrenaline sports).

ACCOMMODATION IN THE TOWN OF HIGH TATRAS
From June 1st, 2020, every visitor who is accommodated in the town of High Tatras, written down in the register of accommodated persons and paid the local tax, is collectively insured for the search and rescue by the Mountain Rescue Service.
Keep your proof of accommodation and in the event of an accident, contact the UNION insurance company and report through the collective agreement no. 37 742 004. The insurance is valid from arrival at the accommodation (check-in) to departure from the accommodation (check out).
Note: The territory of the town of High Tatras consists of Tatra settlements from Tatranská Kotlina to Popradské Pleso. You can see the area of this second-largest town on the attached map. Do not forget to check with your accommodation owner if they are registered for tax in the town of High Tatras. WARNING! Štrbské Pleso does not belong to the town of High Tatras!

Don’t forget to call the number 18 300 in the event of an accident in a mountain environment. You can also use the mobile application by the Mountain Rescue Service, which will also help with your location.
After the accident, the Mountain Rescue Service will issue an invoice in your name. Contact your insurance company with this invoice and proof of insurance (proof of accommodation or insurance contract) and report the insured event.
