Ski Touring through Veľká Studená dolina

A very popular valley for ski tours for the more experienced with refreshments at Zbojnícka chata. From Hrebienok, take the red hiking trail “Magistrála”, follow the winter route behind the crossroads above Rainerova chalet, which leads under a marked hiking trail, closer to the stream. The locals call this part Húpačky. You’ll find out why when driving down. When leaving the forest, you return to the marked trail and cross several avalanche parts from the couloirs (Kráľovský, Veverkov waterfall). Therefore, plan a break higher up in the valley. Take the first climb after the winter bar markings, which will lead you to a narrowing along the snowy stream called Brána. This section may be exposed to blowing snow on the left side and represents an avalanche trap. You also have two options to choose from – either straight down the valley (called General) to the end of the valley or to the left along the trail to Zbojnícka chata. We recommend refreshments at the chalet and to go to the end of the valley along the route of the summer trail. If you don’t have enough of the elevation gain, under suitable snow conditions you can walk up to the Malý Závrat saddle, which is a frequent destination for ski tours. As a reward, you can enjoy the descent through General and the valley to the crossroads above Rainerova chalet. Finally, a flat section along the “Magistrála” red trail will test your fitness and skating skills.
