This is one of the oldest and most important towns in the Spis region holding title since 1269. The predominant feature of the town is the 14th century gothic castle rebuilt into a renaissance chateau and modified during the baroque period. It was the main seat of the barons of Thokoly who were renowned as the leaders of the anti-Habsburg uprising. Today the castle is a museum in which medieval handicrafts are displayed. The other main visitor sites in the town are the renaissance town hall built in 1553, the wooden "articular" church without a spire (1717) and the Lutheran Lycee, built in 1776 which contains the largest school library of medieval middle Europe.
Kežmarok – is a town with a rich history and is situated under the High Tatras. Kežmarok was granted city rights in 1269. As a royal free town it was granted other privileges in the 15th century such as: free use of the forests, annual fairs, a coat of arms, the right to bear arms and very importantly, storage rights.
There are 2 sights of national historical importance here – The Lyceum, which has one of the largest historical school libraries in central Europe and the modern articular church dating from the 18th century. Today Kežmarok is one of the most picturesque and one of the largest towns in the Spiš region. The town has 17,500 inhabitants. The large quantity of cultural and historical sights and favourable natural conditions form the basis of its development as a tourist area. Kežmarok can offer 2 hotels and several pensions for the accommodation requirements of tourists.
In 1991 the annual market tradition was renewed. In the summer the European folk and craft festival is held and in the winter the Christmas market takes place.
High Tatras with its 24 peaks higher than 2.500 m above sea level provide the only mountains with an Alpine character in the whole of the 1.200 km length of the Carpathian Mountain range.
The town of High Tatras was founded in 1947 and it has a population of 5,000 residents. The Administrative centre of the town is Stary Smokovec, which together with Tatranska Lomnica and Strbske Pleso provides the focal point for one of the three most important Tatra tourist resorts. High Tatras covers an area of 398 square km and is one of the largest cities in the Slovak republic.
