podtatranske muzeum poprad

The beginnings of the current Podtatranské Museum in Poprad date back to the second half of the 19th century. In 1873, the Hungarian Carpathian Association was founded in Starý Smokovec, the first tourist association in Hungary. In addition to tourism, the association, through its members, also engaged in scientific and educational work. The natural outcome of the constant interest in the natural environment and cultural and historical monuments in the Tatra foothill and Tatra regions was the establishment of the museum.

There are 52,500 pieces of collection items in the museum and more than 18,000 volumes of books in the museum library. Visitors are also offered two new permanent exhibitions. The first one, Poprad and its surroundings in the mirror of ages, presents the history of settlement in the sub-Tatra region from the neanderthaler to the present. The second one will be dedicated to a unique archeological find – the tomb of a nobleman from Poprad – Matejovce from the end of the 4th to the beginning of the 5th century AD. These expositions will also include the objects of craft workshops, located in the museum’s garden.
