The main square is dominated by the church of St George, dating from 1273 and rebuilt in the baroque style in the 18th century. The original gothic interior of the church and the wooden altar of Master Paul of Levoca dating from 1516 is one of its main attributes.
This part was in the past predetermined for trading, due to its suitable, advantageous location. Merchandise from the Baltic countries to The Mediterranean Sea was traded here. The significant personalities coming from this area include, for instance, the members of the Brokoffov family. Even the Hungarian king Matthew stayed here for a certain period. Moreover, the famous Slovak traveler, Móric Beňovský, came from Spišská Sobota. The first record concerning this municipal part is identical to the first reference related to Poprad, in 1256. The population of this urban part is approximately 2,700 inhabitants.
Historically, the oldest and the most significant part of the Poprad Township is Spišská Sobota, which has preserved its historical character till nowadays. The square in Spišská Sobota is, even at present, decorated with the houses built in the Renesaince period, which has attracted a number of film directors to shoot historical scenes for their movies. It is situated in the northeastern part of the town, above the Poprad River. The Church of St. Juraj (George) belongs among the significant sights; its Late Gothic wing altars as well as the main altar from the workshop of Master Pavol from Levoča are worthy of admiration.
