This is the site of an historical reserve. It is one of the most beautiful towns of the Spis region and perhaps of the whole of Slovakia. The cathedral church of St Joseph's was reconstructed from the historical remains of the former church that was destroyed by fire in 1550 into what is now a fine example of a perfectly preserved which dominates the renaissance complex of the town hall and the house of Thurzo.

Spišská kapitula
Spišská kapitula

This is the seat of the Bishop of Spis, the centre of Church administration and is located near to the town of Spisske podhradie. An important part of this religious complex is the Cathedral of St Martin (1245-1275), which is one of the oldest gothic buildings in Slovakia. The Bishop's palace and the clock tower along with the French garden have been reconstructed in the baroque style. Located above Spišské Podhradie on the hill opposite Spiš Castle, Spišská Kapitula is a unique urbanistic-architectonic complex encircled by fortified walls. It is a small clerical town that was founded in the Middle Ages, and is sometimes called the Slovak Vatican.

Spiš castle

Covering a total area of 4.2 hectares, this ruin is one of the largest castles in medieval central Europe. From the 12th to the 18th centuries, this was the military watch fort and former seat of the Spis governor (Zupan). The castle was burned to the ground in 1780 and never rebuilt. Some parts of the castle's interior parts were saved and can be seen in the Hodkovce and Markusovce mansion.

Žehra
Žehra

The church of the Holy Spirit. This former early gothic church was rebuilt in baroque style. Valuable early gothic interior paintings were saved for the National cultural preserve. The church is situated in a village with an unusual name – Žehra. The originally Slavic name was accepted even by the Hungarians who called the village “Zsigra”. The “g” in the name points out the fact that the village existed before 1200, since at that time the Slovak language was in the process of exchanging “g” for “h”. Thus, while Hungarians accepted the old “g”, this letter changed into “h” in the Slovak language. The name of the village may therefore be derived from the noun “žeh” – the burning (of dead bodies).

The Red Monastery is an excellent example of one of the best cultural monuments in Slovakia. It is a former Carthusian gothic monastery that was built in 1319 and rebuilt in a baroque style in the late 18th century. Today the museum contains a history of the development by the "healing monks" of herbal and pharmaceutical cures for a wide range of illnesses. The monastery also pays tribute to the legendary monk Cyprian who collected together a valuable "herbarium" in medieval times. But one of the main tourist attractions at this place is that of "rafting" down the river Dunajec on specially constructed wooden boats called "Plte". The cruise is along the boundary of Slovakia with Poland and is 8.5 km in length taking about 2 hours. The journey runs through the beautiful scenery of the Pieniny National Park. At the end of the journey, tourists are recommended to take the easy walk along the pathway back to the beginning of the trip.
