TER SEASON CLOSURE OF HIKING TRAILS IN HIGH TATRAS.
Starting from November the 1st all the marked tourist hiking trails and educational routs in the Tatra National Park (TANAP) are closed for winter season. Most of the hiking trails to the highest tatra summits and high passes will be closed.
“To clarify, only hiking trails which lead to the mountain hutts will stay opened” said Šturcel. The only exception will be the hutt “Chata pod Rysmi,” which will be closed for public as of 1.11.2008, due to the fact that the season enclosement of the hiking trails will also concern the trail from the junction under the “Žabie plesá” to the summit of “Rysy“. The tourist hiking trails will be closed until 15.6.2009.
The winter season closure of the tourist hiking routs was established by the former Administration of TANAP in 1979 due to two facts. The first one was nature preservation and the second one was the safety of tourists. In the past, the closure used to lust until 30th June. In the past few years, however, it was shortened only until 15th June. The closure is meant to prevent people to step on flora casing in this delicate time of year, mainly on the range and saddleback parts of the mountains, and also to protect the most valuable Tatra animals – the chamois and the marmot. The mating season of the chamois in the fall and the younglings being born in the spring are two most sensitive seasons for the chamois. The marmot wakes up from its hibernation in the spring.
The hiking trail towards the Symbolic cemetery near “Popradksé pleso” remains opened. The winter closure of this trail will start on 1st of December and last until 15th of June. Further informations can be found on the web site of TANAP www.lesytanap.sk.

High Tatras:
High Tatras with its 24 peaks higher than 2.500 m above sea level provide the only mountains with an Alpine character in the whole of the 1.200 km length of the Carpathian Mountain range.
The town of High Tatras was founded in 1947 and it has a population of 5,000 residents. The Administrative centre of the town is Stary Smokovec, which together with Tatranska Lomnica and Strbske Pleso provides the focal point for one of the three most important Tatra tourist resorts. High Tatras covers an area of 398 square km and is one of the largest cities in the Slovak republic.
