The city of High Tatras and the city of Poprad are both preparing for the royal visit from Elizabeth II. and prince Philip on the 24th of October. The royal couple will departure from Bratislava and will land in Poprad in the morning, said the ambassador of Great Britain in Slovakia, Michael Roberts. The royal couple will begin their visit of the region in the High Tatras where, accompanied by the president of Slovakia, Ivan Gašparovič, they will take a walk in Stary Smokovec and take the cable car on to Hrebienok.
The locals will present the Tatras, their traditions and will inform the royal couple also about the environmental questions which arose after the hurricane, which hit The Tatra national park in November 2004. Prince Phillip will, together with Silvia Gašparovičová, stop in Stary Smokovec to attend the conference of The Tatra school of regional development and as a symbol of Tatra revitalization, he will plant a tree. He will then go to the AquaCity in Poprad, which is an example of environmental approach. It utilizes the geo-thermal energy. The majority owner of AquaCity Ján Telenský is, according to the ambassador, thinking of building a similar resort in Britain. "Duke of Edinburgh will get to know how the geo-thermal aqua park works and will attend the conference of young climate advocates. It is a project of the British Council in Slovakia. Young people will debate about examples of how to lower the threat of climate changes," said Roberts. The Queen will see the Church of St. George in Spišská Sobote, which has the altar made by Master Pavol of Levoča. The connection between history and present will be made by the wood carvers in the boroughs center. Folk artist, gypsy music and folk music will be presented on the historical town square of Spišská sobota. To conclude their visit, the royal couple will attend the hockey match between the local team and Guilford Flames from England. The British royal couple will leave Poprad in the afternoon.
