Spišská kapitula

This is the seat of the Bishop of Spis, the centre of Church administration and is located near to the town of Spisske podhradie. An important part of this religious complex is the Cathedral of St Martin (1245-1275), which is one of the oldest gothic buildings in Slovakia. The Bishop's palace and the clock tower along with the French garden have been reconstructed in the baroque style. Located above Spišské Podhradie on the hill opposite Spiš Castle, Spišská Kapitula is a unique urbanistic-architectonic complex encircled by fortified walls. It is a small clerical town that was founded in the Middle Ages, and is sometimes called the Slovak Vatican.

At its center, there is the Episcopal Cathedral, the Episcopal Palace, and the canons’ houses. They all date back to medieval times, however, the façades of many of the canons’ houses contain elements of the Baroque style. As early as in the 12th century, the town became the seat of the Spiš Provost and the Episcopate – kapitula. In 1776, Spišská Kapitula became the seat of the Bishop of Spiš. Entering through the lower gate, the visitor has an unusual view – a street with the canons’ houses on both sides. Many of these houses are decorated with statues, paintings, coat-of-arms, and Baroque decoration. Some buildings even maintained the original interior decoration (e.g. wall paintings in house no. 27). Each house has a big backyard surrounded by a wall that is accessible from the street, a garden and economic buildings, including a smaller house for the servants. There is also a beautiful original Baroque clock tower from 1739, which originally served as an entrance to the French park of the Episcopal Palace. Opposite the tower is a statue of St. John of Nepomuk, patron saint of the local seminary. The seminary lies next to the modern building of the former teacher training college. Behind the clock tower is the Episcopal Palace built in Baroque style, although its lower part was built as early as the 13th century, when the Provost of Spiš resided in the palace. Original representative rooms and a chapel have been preserved in the building. The real jewel of Spišská Kapitula is the Episcopal Cathedral, which is a textbook-like example of Romanesque and Gothic architectural development. The rear section and two towers of the cathedral date back to the 13th century and are in Romanesque style which can be observed on the pillars’ capitals. During the Gothic reconstruction of St. Martin’s Cathedral in 1462 – 1478, the naves doubled in height and a new Gothic presbytery was built in the front. At the end of the 15th century, a new sanctuary and a high tomb chapel were added to the cathedral by Stephen Zapolya who was the owner of the Spiš Castle at the time. Its star vault, present in the chapel as well, resembles the celestial Jerusalem. After the reconstruction at the end of the 19th century, colored window-panes were added to the cathedral. Its interior is decorated with precious medieval relics, the oldest of them being the White Lion, known as Leo Albus, one of the few Romanesque statues preserved in Slovakia. Above the entrance, a mural painting from 1317, probably by an Italian master, shows the coronation of Charles Robert of Anjou the King of Hungary. It depicts Madonna sitting on the throne, attended by the Spiš Castle custodian kneeling beside Charles Robert, and the Archbishop of Esztergom with the Provost of Spiš handing Madonna the royal crown. There are several altars in the cathedral.
