The Red Monastery is an excellent example of one of the best cultural monuments in Slovakia. It is a former Carthusian gothic monastery that was built in 1319 and rebuilt in a baroque style in the late 18th century. Today the museum contains a history of the development by the "healing monks" of herbal and pharmaceutical cures for a wide range of illnesses. The monastery also pays tribute to the legendary monk Cyprian who collected together a valuable "herbarium" in medieval times. But one of the main tourist attractions at this place is that of "rafting" down the river Dunajec on specially constructed wooden boats called "Plte". The cruise is along the boundary of Slovakia with Poland and is 8.5 km in length taking about 2 hours. The journey runs through the beautiful scenery of the Pieniny National Park. At the end of the journey, tourists are recommended to take the easy walk along the pathway back to the beginning of the trip.
In 1319 master Kakaš donated the community of Lechnica to the friars of Skala (today Kláštorisko in Slovak Paradise) who built in the nearby valley of St Anton a Carthusian monastery. Because the buildings of the monastery were built of red bricks the people began to call it Červený kláštor (Red Monastery).
Monastery Červený kláštor – Červený Kláštor Červený kláštor is a unique cultural and historical relic set in the wonderful natural environment of Pieniny under the majestic mountain Tri koruny. The monastery was successfully restored in the years 1956-1966.
The best building, from an architectural point of view, is the Gothic church of St Anton from the end of the 14th century with one nave of unusual length restored in the Baroque style. The main altar is in the Baroque style, built in 1745.
The monastic buildings are next to the church from the north. In the Baroque building some older Gothic features are recognisable. The remains of the Late-Gothic paintings on the walls of the monastic refectory date back to 1520. In the building of the former monastery is a museum with ethnographic, pharmaceutical and historical collections. Exhibitions are owned by the Východoslovenské múzem in Košice. Červený kláštor associates with the name of Fray Cyprián who was known for his thorough knowledge of medicinal plants. The herbarium he compiled is included in the exhibition.
In front of the entrance to the monastery is the park declared the Protected Area of Pieninské lipy in 1972. It protects 19 old and valuable lime trees.
