Facts about the hike:Total Hiking time: 6-7 Hours Difficulty level: Medium Trail mark colours: Red, Green Vertical profile: Strbske pleso (1355 m) - Popradské pleso (1500 m) - Sedlo pod Ostrvou (1966 m) - Batizovské pleso (1884 m) - Velické pleso (1665 m) - Tatranska Polianka (1005 m) The majority of this hike is along the red tourist mark of Tatra Magistrale which is the longest Tatra hike crossing the High Tatras in an east-west direction. The route may be compared to a tourist highway that connects most of the Tatras sites. The starting point of this hike is located in Mlynicka dolina valley near to the Helios sanatorium. From this point the Popradske pleso lake (1500 m) should be reached in about 60 minutes. This part of the hike is a difficult ascent to the Pod Ostrvou pass at 1,966 m. This should take approximately 50 minutes. Continue along the trail, slowly rising and falling till the Batizovske pleso-lake is reached. This should take about 60 - 90 minutes. From Batizovske pleso the trail goes downwards and after 50 minutes the Sliezsky dominear Hotel and Velicke pleso lake (1,665 m) should be reached. From this point, and for the first time on this hike, leave the red mark and follow the green trail down to Tatranska Polianka (70 - 80 minutes) which is the destination for this hike. To return back to Strbske it is recommended to use the railway. The trail is open all year. However, in winter time the section Popradske pleso - Pod Ostrvou may be closed because of the possibility of avalanches.

High Tatras:
The town of High Tatras was founded in 1947 and it has a population of 5,000 residents. The Administrative centre of the town is Stary Smokovec, which together with Tatranska Lomnica and Strbske Pleso provides the focal point for one of the three most important Tatra tourist resorts. High Tatras covers an area of 398 square km and is one of the largest cities in the Slovak republic.
