Starting from March 2009 the Poprad-Tatry airport regular line to London will be accompanied by two other regular lines. The first one should connect Poprad and Bratislava, the destination of the second one is Italy's Bologna. Poprad-Bologna will be available two times a week and the connection to Bratislava even four times a week. The flight from Poprad to Bratislava will last only 35 minutes. “The lines will start to operate with the summer flight schedule, meaning from March 2009. The flights will be provided by the Danube Wings airlines” said the CEO of Poprad airport Ivana Herkeľová. Both lines will be operated by turbo-propelled plane ATR-72 with capacity up to 70 seats.
To maximize the comfort and quality the new arrival terminal will be finished before Christmas 2008. This terminal will enable smooth dispatch of planes with capacity up to 200 people, accenting the anticipated bigger amount of luggage. The terminal was built from July 2008 until the beginning of December. The total cost was 31,147 million crowns (1,034 million euro).
In the year 2008 the Poprad-Tatry airport renewed the system of lights on the landing strip 27. The previous system was able to stay in place only due to the exception of the Flight Office of Slovakia. The new system of lights “will enable landing of airplanes in low visibility and in fog, which will enhance the safety of the flight” said Herkeľová. The budget of the reconstruction reached more then 18,906 million crowns (627,56 thousand euro). The construction of the new terminal and the reconstruction of the airstrip lights was funded by the European union funds and from the national budget. Unfortunately, the number parking spaces could not be increased in the 2008. The Poprad-Tatry airport is the highest situated airport in the central Europe, it is situated approximately 718 meters above sea level. The history of the airport starts in the 1938, when a combat airport was built in preparation of the defenses. The first regular line started to fly in 1943 on the route of Bratislava – Sliač – Poprad – Prešov. Starting from 1970 the airport has a concrete landing strip. The airport has serviced about 70 000 customers a year during the 70s and 80s. In 2007 it was 60 109 customers. The most successful in the history of the airport was the year 1970, when the airport dispatched 156 000 customers.
